We want to set up a bank account for our fund raising and operating expenses. If money is made out to the fire department it must be turned over to the county and we are limited as to the type of expenditures we make. Can we open an account for fire corps, is it considered a 501(c)3 contribution, and do we file anything else other than an SS4 with the federal government?

Hi Alice! If you want to open a bank account for your Fire Corps, you would need to first register as a 501(c)3 organization (which usually also means incorporating within your state as well). It can be a lengthy process and I would recommend getting help from an attorney or CPA to accomplish this (you may find someone who will donate their services). Once you become a 501(c)3 there are annual reporting requiements you need to adhere to, including submitting a Form 990 with the federal government and, if your organization is incorporated, there are annual filing requirements for that as well. It is certainly achievable and there are a number of departments who have gone this route. If you'd like to talk to someone who has done this we can put you in touch with them.
