Welcome to the Fire Corps E-Update. Fire Corps is a locally-driven Citizen Corps program that allows community members to offer their time and talents to their local fire and EMS departments in non-operational roles. Fire Corps serves as a gateway to information for and about fire and EMS department programs and meets a citizen's desire to serve as well as a department's need for support. In this issue:
Help Your Community Go DigitalOn February 17, all television stations will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and will begin broadcasting completely in digital. This transition will have two major implications for the fire and emergency services. Fire Corps programs can act now to remind their communities of the dangers during the winter season and how to prevent them. Since each community faces different threats, here are some ideas of topics that may apply in your area: Read More Fire Corps and the U.S. Fire Administration Seek a Safer "Home Fire Season"October through March is “home fire season,” and Fire Corps is working in conjunction with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) to ensure this year’s cold months are safer than last years when there was a dramatic increase in home fire deaths. According to the USFA, during the 2007 “home fire season,” there was a 68 percent increase in the number of fatal home fires and a 67 percent increase in the number of people killed in home fires, compared to the warmer months. Your Fire Corps team can act now to convince community members to include a few items that could save their lives or the lives of their loved ones. Below are five examples of practical safety resolutions you can distribute in your community, along with the reasons each one is so important: Read More Department Profile: Victoria (TX) Fire DepartmentThe Victoria Fire Department (VFD) serves a population of over 100,000, and for the last year and a half the department has received help from the Victoria Civilian Fire Academy Alumni (VCFAA), a registered Fire Corps program. The VCFAA is comprised of 30 members of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and levels of experience. The one thing they all have in common is the desire to support and supplement resource-constrained fire and emergency service organizations in the Victoria area.
