January 25, 2010 Welcome to the Fire Corps E-update. Fire Corps is a locally-driven Citizen Corps program that allows community members to offer their time and talents to their local fire and EMS departments in non-operational roles. Fire Corps serves as a gateway to information for and about fire and EMS department programs and meets a citizen's desire to serve as well as a department's need for support. In this issue:
Second Edition of Fire Corps Resource Guide Now Available The second edition of the Fire Corps Resource Guide is now available for download. The Resource Guide is designed to help fire/EMS departments wishing to establish or enhance Fire Corps programs, and includes information on starting and administering a local program, enhancing an existing program, recruiting and retaining Fire Corps members, and much more. It also profiles several successful Fire Corps programs and provides sample documentation. Download the Guide at www.firecorps.org/Implement. ^ Back to Top First Alert Smoke Alarm Donation Program Renewed for 2010 Fire Corps and First Alert have renewed their partnership for 2010. Last year, First Alert provided free smoke alarms to Fire Corps programs across the nation to install in their communities. Because of the program’s success, First Alert will donate 1,000 smoke alarms this year. Read full article. ^ Back to Top Share MLK Day Service Stories with Fire Corps January 18 was Martin Luther King Day, a recognized day of service across the nation. Since 1994, when Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, Americans are encouraged to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by turning community concerns into citizen action. Last year, a record number of Americans honored Dr. King by volunteering. More than 13,000 service projects took place across the country, doubling the total from 2008. Read full article. ^ Back to Top Submit a Nomination for the NVFC’s Annual Awards: Deadline is February 12 There is still time to nominate the outstanding volunteer firefighters in your department for one of the National Volunteer Fire Council’s prestigious awards. Nominations for the Fire Prevention Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Junior Firefighter of the Year Award, and Junior Firefighter Program of the Year Award are due February 12. Read full article. ^ Back to Top Safe Kids USA Accepting Fire Safety Contest Entries If a fire occurs in a home, it is very important that families can escape immediately. Smoke can kill very quickly, and in a flaming fire there is an average of only three minutes after a smoke alarm sounds to escape. Safe Kids USA, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent injury in children, is hosting a contest for preschool teachers to teach children and their parents about how to escape a home fire. Read full article. ^ Back to Top Nominations for 9-1-1 Honor Awards Now Open The E9-1-1 Institute, the National Emergency Number Association, the Association of Public Safety Communications-Officials International, the National Association of State 9-1-1 Administrators, and the 9-1-1 Industry Alliance announced the opening of nominations for the Seventh Annual Honor Awards. The ceremony honors heroes and leaders in emergency communications. The fire department was under enormous stress from the incident and realized that the help of everyday citizens would have reduced the burden. After asking the community for their help, the residents of Mohawk responded, and now the department has a Fire Corps team of 20 volunteers ready to serve when needed.
