The founder of the Albemarle County Fire Corps program has been named the most outstanding fire corps volunteer in the state by the Virginia Citizen Corps, county officials announced Tuesday.

Kathryn Presson has invested an average of 30 hours per month over the course of the past year in an effort to ensure the success of the program she founded.

The county fire corps focuses on educating and recruiting residents, responding to emergencies and providing support to those recovering from a fire or other disaster and supporting the installation of smoke detectors.

“Ms. Presson continues to be a tremendous asset to our efforts towards providing a safe and healthy community here in Albemarle County” Albemarle County Deputy Fire Chief John Oprandy said in a news release. “I am very proud of what she has accomplished and glad to see her hard work acknowledged at the state level.”
