Posada Java will mark National Chili Month on Oct. 22 by hosting the second chili cook-off to benefit the Green Valley Fire Corps Volunteers. The competition is open to the public.

Competition will be judged in three categories: Best Chili (decided by a panel of five judges); Best People’s Choice Chili (decided by votes of guest attendees); and Best Chili Spirit Award (also decided by the judges for most original presentation, theme, booth set-up and audience appeal).

Tastings are open to the public starting at 11 a.m. One $5 ticket buys sample tastes from each chili pot and a vote for Best People’s Choice Chili. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Posada Java, at the administrative office of the Green Valley Fire Department on Camino Del Sol, or from Green Valley Fire Corps volunteers.

“Last year we had eight teams; let’s top that this year,” said Shoppes manager Mary Fisher, adding this year employees of Posada Java will enter the competition, too.

All kinds of chili recipes are welcome — chili relleno, chili con carne, chicken chili, chunky veggie chili, crockpot chili, hot dog chili, and the list goes on.

The cook-off comes with a few rules:

  • Set up and cooking begins at 7 a.m.
  • Meat may be cooked in advance, but chili must be cooked on-site from scratch and kept hot and ready for judging at 11 a.m. Electrical connections will be provided.
  • Ingredients may not include rice or pasta.
  • La Posada will reimburse each entrant or group $35 for the cost of ingredients to cook up to eight gallons of chili.

Deadline to enter the cook-off is Oct. 17. To enter, stop in at Posada Java for a registration form, or call or e-mail Mary Fisher at 520-648-7870 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
