Fire Corps and the International Fire Service Training Association/Fire Protection Publications awarded the Sun City West Fire District Fire Corps with the 2012 Fire Corps Award of Excellence Honorable Mention.

The Sun City West Fire District Fire Corps program was established in May 2008. The Sun City West Fire District Fire Corps members, alongside Fire District personnel and the Sun City West Citizen Corps Council, assist in making the District’s communities safer, stronger, and better prepared while addressing high risk areas like falls and fire and burn injuries. The goal of the District’s Fire Corps Program is to assist the Community Risk Management Division with programs and services that will reduce injuries and death due to injuries for the District’s senior community members while providing rewarding opportunities for volunteers to give back to their community. The District’s Fire Corps Program provides opportunities for community members to volunteer to support programs such as blood pressure screenings; lockbox installations; a lockbox maintenance program; smoke alarm and battery installations and checks; home safety assessments; chest compression only CPR (CCO-CPR) and AED training; traditional CPR/First Aid/AED training; emergency preparedness awareness training; falls and burn preventions; educational opportunities at community events; fire extinguisher training; a child passenger safety seat installation and loaner program; community partnerships; and assistance with administrative duties, etc.

The District’s volunteers offer services that produce positive changes in the retirement community of Sun City West and the Sun City West Fire District as a whole. Growing to over 50 members due to enthusiasm and effort, the Sun City West Fire District Fire Corps provided much needed and invaluable services to the community by volunteering over 3400 hours in 2011. The greatest benefit that the volunteers provide by installing devices such as smoke alarms and lockboxes or providing blood pressure screenings is the lifesaving potential of these services. Community members are very appreciative of the programs offered by the volunteers as seen by the myriad of thank you letters, accolades in the newspaper, and donations made by community members to support the program. The individual satisfaction of the volunteers and appreciation of the community has helped grow the program since its pilot. Fire Corps members become volunteers after hearing about the program from dedicated volunteers, being the recipient of services provided by current volunteers, or reading about the program in the newspaper. The enthusiasm and drive of our volunteers to provided lifesaving services to the community has helped make our community safer, stronger, and better prepared.

This is a tremendous effort on the part of the District’s Fire Corps members; they are truly unique. Because of their remarkable achievements working alongside the Sun City West Fire District and their outstanding performance in the community, the Sun City West Fire District congratulates the Fire Corps members for their 2012 Award of Excellence Honorable Mention. Their professionalism, effectiveness, and efficiency in providing lifesaving services that make Sun City West safer, stronger, and better prepared for community members to work, play, live, and visit are greatly appreciated.
