Volunteer Fire Corps set up in Painesville

The Painesville City Fire Department is accepting applications for its new Fire Corps volunteer program.

Established in late 2012, the Painesville Fire Corps is part of a nationwide effort coordinated by FEMA called Citizen Corps that began in January 2002 in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Painesville City Fire Chief Mark Mlachak said he hopes the program gives citizens an opportunity to give back, but it also helps the department deal with ever-shrinking budgets.

"We've gotten to the point where we need that help," Mlachak said.

While part of a national program, Mlachak said each department can tailor the volunteers to suit their needs.

The volunteers will be non-operational positions, so they won't be "toting hose" or going out on EMS calls, the chief said.

But if volunteers help fulfill many of the non-emergency tasks, it lets the firefighters focus on helping when emergencies come up.

Basically any way people want to help, whether it be vehicle maintenance or helping educate the public about fire safety, Mlachak said he'd probably be able to find a place for them.

"If someone wants to do some gardening, we've got the 9-11 memorial that could use some work," he said.

The department's even looking for a historian and someone to go to fire calls and take photos, said Mlachak.

The chief also stressed the volunteers will not be cutting into the hours of any currently paid employees or taking anyone's job.

Anyone wanting more information on the program can stop by the fire offices, call 440-392-5852 or visit firecorps.org. The department will also be holding an open house

Applications can be found online at the Painesville City Fire Department's website at www.painesville.com. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
