Focus on Heart Health in February and Year Round

Wednesday, 20 February 2013

February is American Heart Month, and Fire Corps teams can help members of their department stay healthy and safe by initiating or assisting with health and wellness programs.

The emergency response community is no stranger to cardiovascular disease. Every year, about half of all firefighter deaths are attributed to heart attack, which is the leading cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities. In order to combat this problem, the National Volunteer Fire Council designed the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program to promote fitness, nutrition, and health awareness within America's fire and emergency services.
