Fire Corps Bestows 2008 Award of Excellence to Macomb Township Fire Department

Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Fire Corps presented its 2008 Award of Excellence to Macomb Township (MI) Fire Department during the Fire Corps National Advisory Committee (NAC) Meeting on November 10 in Greenbelt, MD. This award honors a Fire Corps program whose remarkable achievements in the fire and emergency services and the community exemplify outstanding performance. The actions and dedication of the Macomb Township Fire Corps team have truly had a positive impact in allowing their department to respond to the needs of the community.

Sgt. Dwayne Thompson and Fire Corps members Tracy Kaye and John Halsey accepted the award on behalf of the department. Although unable to attend, Macomb Township Fire Chief Robert Phillips sent a video message to the NAC, which was played during the Award presentation.

“Thank you to the Fire Corps National Advisory Committee for recognizing our program with the first annual Award of Excellence,” Phillips said. “It is not everyday to be honored with the highest award on a national level by such a prestigious group that represents some of the most elite organizations in the fire service.”

The Macomb Township Fire Department, located about an hour north of Detroit, MI, has a mission to help protect and serve their community through progressive training, organization, and teamwork. The Fire Corps program has adopted and initiated many department projects since the program’s inception, each led by a different Fire Corps member. These include preparing kits to help residents who have suffered a tragedy, performing child safety seat inspections, educating new parents about infant safety, and overseeing the creation of an emergency translation book.

Macomb’s Fire Corps works closely with the local Community Emergency Response Team, which allows members to receive free training in areas of emergency response, such as CPR and first aid. The Fire Corps volunteers also receive in-depth training in different areas of safety and preparedness, which they then bring into the community where they teach important safety messages.

Macomb Township created several Fire Corps and fire safety public service announcements (PSAs), which aired on local television stations and resulted in an increase in the number of Fire Corps volunteers. To view these PSAs, visit
