Theme Announced for Fire Prevention Week 2009: Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned

Tuesday, 16 June 2009

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, 2009. This year’s campaign, Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned, focuses on the importance of fire safety and fire safety education and ways to prevent fires and the deaths, injuries, and property loss they cause.

According to the NFPA, 84 percent of all fire deaths in 2007 were attributed to a home fire. By providing valuable information and safety tips, the campaign aims to help the public keep their homes and its occupants safe from fire and burns.

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a fire that lasted for two days, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 people homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings. For more information about the 2009 event, including planning materials, safety tips, statistical information, and other resources that can be used by fire departments, Fire Corps teams, and teachers, visit www.firepreventionweek.org.
