Tips for Recruiting New Members

Wednesday, 19 January 2011

Is your Fire Corps program looking for ways to help your department recruit new volunteers? Or maybe your Fire Corps program could use more hands and feet. Below are several ideas of recruitment activities that can be done to draw in newcomers, whether as emergency or non-emergency volunteers.

  • Talk to the student life department at a local college or university and find out if they would allow you to hang flyers or posters stating your department’s need for volunteers. Many schools require their students to complete a certain number of volunteer hours each semester or school year, so it may be well worth your effort.
  • Create business cards promoting 1-800-FIRE-LINE or your department’s web address and toss them out to the crowds during parades.
  • Post a sign outside your department stating your desire for volunteers. Many people never offer to volunteer because they do not think their help is needed.
  • Set up a booth at your town fair or local market days. If possible, have pictures of people in action and have a list of possible roles that a volunteer could fill.
  • Go from home-to-home leaving door hangers behind with information about volunteering. Free door hangers promoting 1-800-FIRE-LINE can be requested from the Fire Corps national office.
