Springfield Township (OH) Volunteer Fire Department

The Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department (STVFD) has counted on citizen support for many years, and implementing a Fire Corps program was a natural fit for their department. Fire Corps provided a way to bring all of their auxiliaries/associations from each station together under one umbrella.

STVFD consists of 67 firefighters and EMS personnel that are responsible for a 36-square-mile area bordering the Ohio/Pennsylvania line. Their newly developed Fire Corps program is made up of close to 80 individuals who assist by providing dinners for STVFD’s first responders as well as to surrounding departments during training/continuing education nights. They also assist with fundraisers such as annual Christmas tree sales, pancake breakfasts, community dinners, a turtle soup stag, and a Midnight Firefighter Walk that coordinates with the area Relay for Life.

The department looks forward to identifying more ways Fire Corps volunteers can support their efforts. Fire Chief Matt Gebhardt is excited about the role Fire Corps volunteers will play this upcoming year in fire prevention, recruitment, fire safety education, and rehab for emergency personnel during calls and trainings.

Support from the national Fire Corps office has been crucial in the development and success of the STVFD Fire Corps program. Being a registered program has allowed STVFD to take advantage of helpful resources including a fire prevention kit, promotional items to help with recruitment efforts, and access to the Ohio State Advocate Candice McDonald, a relationship that has allowed the program to work with the State Citizen Corps Council.
