George Smith The Tomball Fire Department, located just outside of Houston, TX, is a combination department serving a population of 25,000. The department has a unique Fire Corps program consisting of 5 members of the community who conduct fire pre-plans for the department.

George Smith, a retired engineer, has been a Fire Corps member with the department for nearly 10 months and has been bestowed the title of Pre-Plan Coordinator. As a member of the department's Fire Corps team, George assists the department in obtaining copies of construction drawings submitted to the City of Tomball Building Department and selects the drawings that contain floor plans, utility connection points, roof structure and roof loads, and site layout to identify key features such as access points, water supply, and indications of special hazards. George takes this information and transfers it to a specialized CAD program that removes irrelevant information and clearly indicates the data that is important to emergency responders. This information is then printed out and placed in notebooks located in each emergency vehicle and will also soon be available electronically through the city's GIS system.

During his 10 month tenure, George has gone from learning how to use a personal computer to having completed approximately 100 commercial building pre-plans for the Tomball Fire Department, making a large dent in the 1750 establishments that will be included in the pre-plan project. Additionally, George has recruited two additional Fire Corps members to assist in these important endeavors.
