Fire Corps Attends Volunteer Recognition Event at White House
Monday September 22nd, 2008On September 8, President Bush honored the nation’s volunteers at an event held on the South Lawn of the White House. The President hosted several hundred guests and representatives from volunteer organizations, including members of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and Fire Corps staff.
The event was held three days prior to the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and just days after Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna wreaked havoc on two American coastlines, providing a timely reminder of the importance of volunteerism. In addition to giving well-deserved praise to the nation’s volunteers, the President’s speech emphasized his call to service to the American people, challenging all Americans to devote at least 4,000 hours serving “our nation through acts of compassion.” The President also recognized specific volunteer programs, including Fire Corps, which is administered by the NVFC, and its parent initiative, Citizen Corps.
