September 11: National Day of Service and Remembrance

Friday September 11th, 2009

Each year on September 11 we remember the people who were lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks and the heroism and sacrifice of the firefighters and emergency personnel who responded. To honor the victims, their families, and the bravery of the first responders both during and in the aftermath of the attacks, 9/11 has been designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Signed into law on April 21 as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, the National Day of Service and Remembrance reignites the spirit of unity, compassion, and community service that inspired Americans following the 2001 tragedy. Community members are asked to honor the victims and heroes by answering the call to service and recommitting themselves to helping their neighbors. Across the nation today, Americans are participating in a wide range of service projects and volunteer opportunities. Find more than 250,000 volunteer opportunities as well as do-it-yourself project ideas at www.serve.gov.

Today also marks the end of the summer phase of President Obama’s United We Serve initiative and its transition into a long-term, sustained effort. Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, United We Serve is a collaborative and focused effort to promote service as a way of life for all Americans. Learn more at www.serve.gov.

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and Fire Corps join the nation in remembering the fallen and extend our thanks to all of the firefighters, emergency responders, Fire Corps members, and other volunteers for your selfless work and dedication to serving your community. You are an inspiration to the many people you protect every day.

We must also remember that when large-scale disaster strikes, such as hurricanes, tornados, floods, or man-made attacks, the rescuers are often also victims. The NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund was established to help volunteer first responders whose homes and families are affected by a federally- or state-declared disaster.
