Volunteer During the Martin Luther King Day of Service

Wednesday December 16th, 2009

January 18 is Martin Luther King Day and a recognized day of service across the nation. Since 1994, when Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, Americans are encouraged to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by turning community concerns into citizen action.

Last year, a record number of Americans honored Dr. King by volunteering. More than 13,000 service projects took place across the country, doubling the total from 2008. Americans made it “a day on, not a day off” by delivering meals, refurbishing schools, reading to children, signing up as mentors, and much more. Your Fire Corps program can get involved by helping to coordinate and promote community projects, as well as providing and recruiting volunteers for projects.
