Northwest Fire/Rescue District Fire Corps Program

Northwest Fire/Rescue The Northwest Fire/Rescue District is a non-profit, community-service organization serving the northwest metropolitan Tucson area in Arizona. The District's 100 full-time personnel operate out of 8 stations. The District currently serves over 114,000 residents and 1900 commercial occupancies covering a 140 square mile area.

The Northwest Fire/Rescue District's Fire Corps program uses citizen advocates in a variety of roles, including fire prevention and safety education as well as victim assistance. Northwest Fire Corps members also participate in the District's "Mini Musters" at local schools. Each October, as part of Fire Prevention Month, the Northwest Fire/Rescue District visits area schools and conducts a "Field Day" in which the students participate in a number of team relay races and other timed events that teach them how to respond to and escape from fires. For example, in one of the events, "Follow the Hose", the students are blindfolded and taught how to crawl on the grass while following a fire hose from one end to the other, simulating what they should do if they are lost in a smoke darkened building and cannot find an exit. There is also a relay race in which students learn how to escape when they are able to locate a door or window from which to exit. Fire Corps Team members assisted the Life Safety Services Department in setting up and facilitating these Field Day events.

The Northwest Fire/Rescue Districts Fire Corps team also sorts donations of items and food to fill gift boxes for the local School Resource Centers, which are given out to selected families within the school districts. Additionally, they assemble "After the Fire" packets, which are given to families who have experienced a damaging fire in their homes.
