Welcome to the Fire Corps E-Update. Fire Corps is a locally-driven Citizen Corps program that allows community members to offer their time and talents to their local fire and EMS departments in non-operational roles. Fire Corps serves as a gateway to information for and about fire and EMS department programs and meets a citizen's desire to serve as well as a department's need for support. In this issue:
9/11 Established as National Day of Service and RemembranceLast month, President Barack Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law, authorizing that September 11 be annually recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Although not a federal holiday, the anniversary of September 11, 2001, will be observed as a day for citizens to voluntarily engage in community service. Read More H1N1 Virus Highlights Pandemic PreparednessThe recent outbreak of the H1N1 Virus (swine flu) has refocused attention on the importance of flu and pandemic preparedness. Managing an outbreak requires effort and participation from everyone to help prevent the spread of disease and to ensure communities and families are prepared in the event of a crisis situation. Read More May is Electrical Safety MonthElectrical fires are responsible for one in seven of all home fires in the United States every year. In an effort to raise awareness and reduce the risk of experiencing an electrical fire, May is observed as National Electrical Safety Month. Read More June is Home Safety MonthAccording to the Home Safety Council (HSC), fire and/or burns are the third leading cause of unintentional home injury in the U.S. June is Home Safety Month, providing a perfect opportunity for Fire Corps teams to take a hands-on approach, reach out to the public, and work to reduce this unfortunate statistic. Read More Switch to Digital TV Quickly ApproachingOn June 12, 2009, all full-power broadcast stations in the United States will discontinue broadcasting on analog airwaves and operate only in digital. Congress delayed the transition until June 12 to give consumers four additional months to prepare themselves for the switch. A digital converter must be purchased for analog television sets in order for them to receive broadcasting signals after June 12. Read More FEMA Announces National Citizen Corps Achievement AwardsThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced the first-ever National Citizen Corps Achievement Awards - Celebrating Resilient Communities. The awards will recognize outstanding Citizen Corps Councils across the nation that implement innovative practices to better prepare their communities for emergency situations. Read More Department Profile: Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Corps (MN)In 2007, Chief Nyle Zikmund of the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department went with his instinct that the citizens of the communities that they serve were interested in supporting their fire department with their time and talents. That instinct was the beginning of the department's Fire Corps program.
