Mountain View (CO) Fire Protection District
The Mountain View Fire Protection District provides an array of emergency and non-emergency services to a population of over 50,000 permanent residents and a commuting population of over 75,000 in a 184 square mile response area around Longmont, CO. Mountain View Fire is a combination organization with 67 full-time employees, 10 paid part-time personnel, 10 volunteers, and 10 Fire Corps members.
The Mountain View Fire Protection District Fire Corps was created in 2007 and volunteers provide assistance in a variety of ways. Fire Corps team members participate in the historian activities of the department by documenting training and other events across the district. Fire Corps members also provide administrative assistance, a canteen service with basic food and other items for large scale incidents, and manpower for any large event or activity in the community.
The Mountain View Fire Corps team is developing a new project for their volunteers that entails a county-wide credentialing program for all members of the fire service. Fire Corps volunteers will travel to each fire department to provide all personnel with county identification badges that will have information about that fire department member, using equipment purchased through a grant obtained by Boulder County Emergency Services. The badges will then be scanned during incidents so that command personnel will be able to better understand the people and abilities available at the scene.
The biggest achievement of the Mountain View Fire Corps te
am has been their “Sparky – The Fire Safety Dog” public education program. Fire Corps volunteers were instrumental in helping to obtain a robotic dog with assistance from the Tri-State Energy and Lightning Arrester Companies. Sparky has been a valuable promotional and public education tool and has visited many businesses, hospitals, schools, and community events to provide fire safety information to children and adults – while causing a few smiles along the way.
